In AD 43 the Roman Emperor Claudius invaded Britain. By this time, native society was made up of territorially-based tribal groups. The Iceni inhabited the area we now call Norfolk as well as parts of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. They swiftly entered into a treaty relationship with Rome. Such ‘client kingdoms’ were normally strategically positioned on the periphery of Rome’s troublesome frontiers, and retained Roman protection.
